Final Project Reflection
Developmental Processs
The developmental process of the eBook was a rough one. After brainstorming on many ideas such as travelling, fashion trends, online dating, we settled on fashion trends. This is because we felt that it would be interesting to talk about it, and many millennials would not be familiar with the topic. However, some problems that I faced while exploring this idea that since we would have to design all elements in our eBook, I felt that pictures drawn out regarding different clothes designs would be difficult and might not look aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, it would be difficult to come up with different design concepts and vibes for each decade, which might then increase our workload.
With feedback received during the critique session, after much deliberation, we finally changed our topic to a millennial's guide to online dating in Singapore. Due to the need to identify a specific target audience, we decided to target millennial girls. I felt that this was a great idea as it would be easier to talk about it since we are all females, making it easier to content curation for the ebook. Having finalised our topic later gave us a late start to our project, which increased the difficulty in finishing our project on time.
We decided to showcase an online dating process, from deciding which profile to be used to places they can go for their first dates. Thus, this guide would be comprehensive to a female millennial who has little idea about online dating and need some guidance in it. I felt that it was important to highlight the "online" aspect of online dating. Thus, I felt that there was a need to have a constant motif of a phone throughout the eBook. This can be seen as to how a phone can be seen in pages 3-4, and 5, as well as a tinder profile in page 6, which is still related to online dating profile on a phone. The texting layout through the use of speech bubbles in page 7 is also related to a phone motif as well.
Contributions
I contributed in taking over the designing of the prototype after the final presentation. Before that, it was mainly Sarah who did the designing. I was extremely grateful to the efforts put in by her as it was definitely not easy to design a whole eBook in a span of 6 days. Moreover the quality of her work as not bad as well. Joy and I came up with the idea for layout in page 5: Swipe Right? and I designed and came up with the layout ideas for page 8: Where To? as well. I also organised the whole eBook to make sure that everything aligned, kept to the margins, and standardised.
I also contributed by helping in the design document and presentation slides, when I was not in charge of the designing on the prototype.
Learning Points
I learnt that one has to be creative and think out of the box when designing. Being a person who usually goes by the book, I faced difficulties being creative and exploring new ideas as I was unable to think of them. To achieve this, I learnt to be more observant to my surroundings, learn from my peers and take inspiration from ideas around me such as Pinterest. Thankfully, I was able to think of the layout for Page 8: Where To?, which was something that was not as conventional as listing out ideas on where to go for first dates.
I also learnt to be open to ideas. Due to different strengths from different team members and ideas suggested by everyone, I had to be open to new ideas and try out their ideas to see if they are suitable. This made me feel a bit overwhelmed at times due to the many suggestions by my groupmates. However, this helped me learn to be more decisive in choosing which would best fit the design, and be more patient when designing them and when improving on each design after the initial design creation. Patience was also needed in taking note of all the details and specifics to ensure that everything was aligned, aesthetically pleasing and standardised. However, due to the fact that it is difficult to please everyone due to the subjectivity of designs and content curation, it is important to compromise and come to a common consensus.
I have also learnt to be organised and neat during the designing process. This is because being messy and not place the design elements to their respective layer groups would make finding each design element a more difficult and frustrating task.
Screenshots of our Work
The following are screenshots of our work on InDesign and Illustrator.
Illustrator was used in the designing of images such as the online dating platform icons and Rachel. InDesign was used for the insertion and alignment of information. Layers in Indesign were labelled according to their respective pages as shown from the picture, making it easier to retrieve elements from each page. To import pictures designed in Illustrator, the "Place" function was used. This increased the ease in placing images over and aligning them.
