Assignment 3: Information Design

The topic I am doing on is depression, which is a silent killer in many countries, including Singapore. Therefore, there is a need to raise awareness about the prevalence of depression in Singapore, depression in youths, what symptoms to look out for as well as how to treat it. My infographic is a form of statisitical, informative infographic. My first sketch is as shown below.

I have taken into account the feedback given to me during critique 1 that there was too much information that I wanted to put into my infographic and to think about what target audience my infographic is for.

I have decided to concentrate on Singapore's statistics and not compare to other countries, and to target youths in raising awareness about depression among youths. Thus, I removed information regarding the elderly, and highlight statistics about youths. After removing the information, I have come up with another sketch on how I would like my infographic to look like (Picture below).

After much effort, I have come up with my infographic, as shown below.

The increasing trend of prevalence of depression in Singapore is shown in the line graph, and data is further displayed in the comparison between male and female prevalence of lifetime depression, as well as the percentage of youths who had depression in 2017.

Use of Typography
The use of sans-serif makes the fonts look clean, making it good for making an impact on the audience on the depression in Singapore and among youths.

Capital letters for "Leading factor in teenage suicide" captures the attention of the reader and emphasises the impact of depression among youths.

The typeface used for the header in individual sections such as "Prevalence of Lifetime Depression" and the text body of all sections is an appropriate choice as it is the personality of the typefaces (Franklin Gothic Demi and Tw Cen MT Condensed respectively) is pretty neutral.

It is readible as the icons and text are well aligned with one another, with most of the text being left-aligned. this increases the ease in reading as there is a hard left edge where readers can base and use it as a reference point when reading. Thus increasing the readibility of the text. Although the "Leading factor in teenage suicide" is centre-aligned to fit into the rectangle nicely, making the text look well balanced in the rectangle and easy to read.

There is also a contrast in typeface choice, with the heading of the inforgraphic "Depression among youths in Singapore" and the individual headings of each sections such as "Prevalence among youths in Singapore", and the typeface choice in the text body being different. This helps to capture the attention of the reader, creating a natural flow in reading and guiding them into reading them read from top to bottom.

Use of Colour
The colour scheme used is differing shades of blue with yellow, and a little orange.

Grey words are used in the infographic, However, considering how grey words on the lighter shades of blue on the bottom part of the infographic, specifically for the "Symptoms of Depression" and "Treatments of Depression", might compromise the readibility of the words, I changed the words to white for those two sections. The use of grey coloured words is to convey an emotionless mood, to depress energy and provide a sense of composure. This is especially since the depressed are often quiet and lack energy, and might need a sense of composure to feel better. Thus, it creates a serious atmosphere, making the reader take this matter seriously in when looking at the infographic.

The use of blue colour background is to create a calm atmosphere in readers as depression is a serious topic and calmness might benefit the reader in absorbing all the information fully and taking the topic seriously.

This colour scheme is a complementary colour scheme, where the colours blue is opposite the colours orange and yellow on the colour wheel. The high contrast in colours, make the headings stand out. This attracts the attention of the reader to the different sections and makes it easier for the reader to know the start of a different infographic section. I have chosen to place darker blue on the top section and decreasing shades of blue for subsequent sections, to symbolise the improvement in depression, as the last section of the infographic is "Treatments". The differing shades also provide structure to the infographic as people can easily make sense, and navigate through the different sections of information. The colours of orange used on the line graph and "Leading factor in teenage suicide" is a high contrast against the darker blue, emphasising the prevalance of depression in Singapore and the impact of depressiong among youths.

The use of yellow and orange on the heading, with "Depression" in orange, and other words in yellow creates a lively impression, attracting the people to the infographic. As orange has a higher attention value and colour recognition than yellow, the word "Depression" will stand out and attract people and emphasise that this infographic is about depression

The use of livelier colours such as red at the section "Treatments of Depreession" is to make the infographic less plain and highlight how people can be more lively upon treatment.

Use of lines
A closed line with a light grey shade placed on a closed curved line surrounds the 18% presents a visual presentation on the seriousness of depression in youths, emphasising that it is a serious matter to look into.

Others
The huge text heading in bright colours is countered by relatively huge icons in the sections "Treatments of Depression". This creates an asymmetrical balance and gives a sense of completion, making the infographic more pleasing to the eyes.

To create an ease in undestanding the infographic, icons are used so that the reader can understand the rough idea point that the infographic wants to bring across, without having to look too much at the text, allowing information to be understood more easily.

Layers
The following would be screenshots of the layers used for my assignment. I placed items belonging in different segments of the infographic into different folders so that it would be more organised as I did my work.
